READ A BOOK

You can read the following book, and we'll talk about it in class.

Ariadne's Story

by Joyce Hannam

Book and multiROM pack. Oxford University Press, Dominoes Two.

Description

'When he went home to Athens, the great prince Theseus left me on the island of Naxos. But why did he leave me? Everyone says that he was tired of me. But when we met, I was the princess of Crete and the most beautiful woman in the Aegean Sea.'

Ariadne's story is one woman's tale of secret love, adventure and of escape - both from danger and from a life that she wanted to leave far behind her - many years ago in Ancient Greece...

SUPER SIZE ME

Why are Americans so fat? Find out in Super Size Me, and look at the legal, financial and physical costs of America's hunger for fast food.

First-time director Morgan Spurlock takes a look at the subject of obesity in the United States, specifically giving attention to the business and culture surrounding the nation's fast-food industry in this 2004 documentary.

In addition to studying the marketing of fast food to American children and unsuccessfully attempting to gain an interview with McDonald's executives, Spurlock attempts to become one of his own subjects by documenting a one-month binge during which he survived only on items from the McDonald's menu, forcing himself to eat three meals a day and try every offering at least once.

STEAL VS ROB

  • Someone robs a person or an organisation, but steals things such as money.

The verb rob is usually followed by the preposition of, while steal is followed by the preposition from. Sometimes the phrase starting with of or from is understood or not stated.

Have a look at the following examples:

  • A mugger robbed me of my wallet in the park.
  • A mugger robbed me in the park.
  • The thief stole a laptop from the store.
  • The thief stole a laptop.
  • They have robbed me.
  • They robbed the bank.
  • I was robbed of my cheque-book.
  • Someone has stolen my watch.
  • They stole plenty of money from us.

LONDON CONGESTION CHARGING SYSTEM

What is the London Congestion Charge?

Certain vehicles are subject to the Congestion Charge if driven within the charging zone between 07:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday.

You do not have to pay the charge on weekends, English public holidays, designated non-charging days, or between 18:00 and 07:00.

Near or at the start of the zone, you'll see the opposite sign, which also says when the zone operates.

You don't need tickets or passes to enter the zone, and there are no tollbooths or barriers.

Cameras at entrances, exits and around the zone read your number plate. They check it against a database to work out whether you've already paid, are exempt, or have a 100 per cent discount. The database is checked until midnight the following charging day.

If there is a match, any images of your vehicle are automatically deleted from the database.

If there is no match, all the images are checked and validated, and a Penalty Charge Notice is sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle.
